Late Summer in Bloom: Finding Beauty in the Season

As I sit down to write this, I can hear the gentle sound of rain outside.

After weeks of warm sunshine and remarkably dry weather, it's a welcome change. While many of us naturally hope for sunny days during the summer months, rain plays such an important role in the world around us. Gardens begin to breathe again, borders seem to lift almost overnight, and everything takes on a freshness that only a good downpour can bring.

It feels like nature is taking a long-awaited drink.

The studio is supplied by a rainwater tank, so the recent rain has felt like good news in more ways than one. It's a gentle reminder that while sunshine often takes the credit, rain quietly works behind the scenes, helping gardens, flowers and the landscape around us continue to thrive. As florists, gardeners and flower lovers know all too well, we simply couldn't enjoy beautiful blooms without it.

Perhaps that's what finding beauty in the season is really about; not wishing for endless sunshine, but appreciating how each change plays its own important part.

A Season Worth Savouring

As the calendar edges towards autumn, I always find myself slowing down just a little.

Late summer has a character all of its own. The days are still warm, gardens continue to burst with colour, and the evenings seem to linger just long enough to remind us to make the most of them. It feels like a gentle pause between the excitement of summer and the cosy comforts that autumn will soon bring.

For me, it's one of the loveliest times of the year to appreciate flowers in all their natural beauty.

Celebrating Nature's Palette

One of the things I enjoy most about being a florist is watching the seasons unfold through flowers.

Every few weeks, the colours, textures and varieties begin to shift almost without us noticing. One moment the fresh greens of spring are everywhere, then suddenly we're surrounded by the joyful abundance of summer, before richer tones gradually begin to emerge as autumn approaches.

At the moment, I'm finding so much inspiration in the flowers that seem to define late summer. Cheerful sunflowers bring warmth and sunshine, delicate cosmos add movement and softness, snapdragons provide beautiful height, while airy dill, statice and amaranthus weave everything together with a wonderfully relaxed, garden-inspired feel.

Each stem has its own personality, and together they create arrangements that celebrate everything I love about this time of year.

A Gentle Rhythm in the Studio

The studio has settled into a lovely, steady rhythm over recent weeks.

Alongside creating bouquets for my wonderful customers, this quieter spell has also provided an opportunity to look ahead and prepare for the exciting celebrations that lie just around the corner. Before long, I'll be immersed in planning and creating flowers for some very special occasions, and I always enjoy seeing those ideas gradually come together.

One of the things I've learnt since starting Blossoms & Blooms Floral Studio is that floristry isn't always about the biggest events. More often than not, it's about life's quieter moments.

A bouquet to brighten someone's kitchen table.

Flowers sent to celebrate a birthday.

A thoughtful gift simply to let someone know they're being thought of.

Those everyday occasions are often every bit as meaningful, and it's a real privilege to be trusted with them.

Finding Beauty in the Everyday

Flowers have a wonderful way of encouraging us to slow down.

They remind us to notice the changing colours in the garden, the evening light catching a vase on the windowsill, or the simple pleasure of bringing a handful of blooms into our homes.

Perhaps that's why I've found myself appreciating today's rain so much. After such a prolonged dry spell, it's a timely reminder that beauty depends on balance. We celebrate the sunshine, but it's the rain that quietly nourishes our gardens, refreshes the soil and helps the next generation of flowers flourish.

Nature rarely hurries, and yet somehow everything arrives exactly when it's meant to.

I think there's something rather comforting in that.

Looking Ahead

As summer gradually begins to give way to autumn, I'm excited to see how the season continues to unfold.

Soon we'll begin to welcome richer colours, interesting seed heads, berries and all the wonderful textures that make autumn flowers so distinctive. Every season brings its own inspiration, and that's one of the reasons I never tire of this profession.

In the meantime, I'll continue enjoying everything that late summer has to offer, creating bouquets that celebrate the beauty of the season and hopefully bring a little joy into someone's day.
