When the Evenings Grow Lighter

As the clocks go forward this weekend, I always feel a real shift; like we’re stepping into a new season not just on paper, but in energy too.

Those longer, lighter evenings bring with them a sense of possibility. There’s suddenly more time after the day slows down… more golden light, more fresh air and, for me, more flowers coming into their own.

And, truly, this is where things start to get exciting.

The start of the British flower season

The British flower season is just beginning to stretch its legs and, over the coming weeks, we’ll see it build into something really special. After the quieter winter months, there’s nothing quite like watching the first local stems return; fresher, more characterful, and far more in tune with the season around us.

Some of my absolute favourites begin to appear at this time of year. Delicate tulips in all their beautiful forms — ruffled, double, parrot — each one with its own personality. Stunning narcissi that fill a room so effortlessly. Then come the romantic, fleeting beauties like ranunculus and anemones, which always feel a little bit magical while they’re here.

As the season unfolds

As we move further into late spring and early summer, the palette only gets richer. Think frothy cow parsley dancing in hedgerows, the soft clouds of astrantia, garden roses just beginning to unfurl, and those textural, just-picked-from-the-garden ingredients that make arrangements feel truly alive.

Using British-grown flowers means embracing that seasonality; no two weeks are quite the same, and that’s part of the joy. It keeps things creative, responsive, and completely unique.

Coming up this season

Coming up, I’m especially excited to be sharing more of that experience in person.

I’ll be demonstrating at my local Flower Club, which is always such a lovely opportunity to share ideas and seasonal inspiration. I also have a floral workshop coming up in June, a chance to slow down, get hands-on with beautiful British flowers, and create something of your own in a relaxed, welcoming space.

Plus, looking a little further ahead, I’m really looking forward to having a stall at the Alston May Fair on Monday 25th May. What a brilliant community event, I can’t wait to bring along buckets of fresh, seasonal stems and some ready-made pieces, all celebrating what’s growing right here in the British countryside at that moment in time. If you’re planning to visit, do come and say hello, it would be so lovely to see you there.

Bringing the season into your home

If you’ve been thinking about treating yourself to flowers more regularly, this is honestly the best time to do it. British blooms are at their peak, full of movement, scent, and those little quirks that make them so special.

Whether it’s a one-off bouquet, something for a special occasion, or one of my subscription options, I’d love to create something for you that really captures the feeling of the season.
